Frequently asked questions
Basal metabolic rate is the number of calories your body uses at complete rest to keep its basic functions running. It does not include calories burned by movement or exercise.
It uses Mifflin-St Jeor: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age, with +5 for male inputs and −161 for female inputs. This is one of the most commonly cited BMR formulas.
BMR formulas are approximations based on population averages. Real metabolic rates vary with body composition, hormones, and other factors, so treat the result as a starting estimate.
